No one should have to manage their health alone. For years, Dawn did exactly that—relying on the ER while juggling prediabetes and mounting bills.
In this edition of Stories from the Circle, meet a lifelong helper who finally accepted help. Through her Wider Circle community, Dawn found relief from her bills and a path back to regular care. She hasn’t been to the emergency room since.
Her story is proof that when someone shows up at the right moment, everything can change.

Dawn P.
The Giver Who Finally Got Someone in Her Corner.
After years without a doctor and a utility crisis she couldn’t solve alone, one connection changed everything.
Dawn spent her days helping others as a nonprofit worker, connecting people with wheelchairs and accessibility resources. Yet, she hadn’t seen a doctor in years—relying on the emergency room whenever a crisis hit, while managing mobility issues, prediabetes, and thyroid problems on her own. When her electricity was threatened with a shutoff and her SNAP benefits were cut simultaneously, she had almost given up.
A simple check-in text from Rajan, her Wider Circle Community Engagement Specialist, changed everything. When Dawn opened up about her impending electricity shutoff, Rajan investigated and discovered a staggering error: the utility company had been charging Dawn’s one-bedroom apartment for the entire building’s meter. He contacted the company, corrected the account, and stopped the shutoff.
Rajan kept showing up. When Dawn couldn’t make a local food giveaway, he brought the groceries to her. While going through the bags, she mentioned avoiding certain foods because of her prediabetes—a challenge she’d been trying to manage on her own. That’s when Rajan asked the question no one had in years: When was the last time she’d been to the doctor?
Dawn admitted it had been years. Rajan didn’t lecture. He laid out a path: a physical first, then blood labs. He reconnected her with her doctor, verified her coverage, and cleared every barrier—and then Dawn went to her first primary care visit in years.
Dawn hasn’t been to the emergency room since. “I consistently book my next appointment before I walk out the door,” she says. “I go every six months now.”

Dawn started showing up to Wider Circle events, and for the first time in years, she felt like she had a community to help her. “I’ve learned that I’m not alone,” she said. “I’ve gained confidence, new friendships, and helpful information that makes my life better.”
The groceries Rajan brought made a difference, too—fresh produce instead of the processed foods she’d been stretching her budget with. For someone managing prediabetes, it wasn’t just food; it was having someone ensure she had the right food.
For a lifelong helper, learning to receive care was its own kind of breakthrough. “I love that Wider Circle makes me feel welcome. It’s a place where I can be myself and know that people care about me.”
Today, Dawn is one of her Wider Circle community’s most active members—joining every virtual call, responding to every invitation, and encouraging new members to lean into the community for support. “It feels good to be part of something where everyone supports each other,” she tells them.
The giver finally has people in her corner: a community, a doctor she trusts, and a standing appointment she books before she walks out the door. She’s not letting go.
Thank you, Dawn, for trusting us with your story. And thank you to our sponsors for making moments like this possible every day.
