At Wider Circle, we believe true well-being starts with connection. Stories from the Circle is our way of highlighting real moments of impact—stories that show how community-driven programs are fostering meaningful connections, improving engagement, and driving better health outcomes.

In April, many of our virtual events are focusing on the importance of Oral Health Screenings and we’re sharing the powerful story of Zulma, a dedicated Community Health Mentor who spent years helping others while quietly facing her own health challenge—accessing dental care.

Her experience is a reminder that sometimes, even those who care for others need support themselves—and that one small act of kindness can lead to life-changing outcomes.

We hope Zulma’s story reminds you of the difference a caring, connected community can make. Thank you for being part of this journey with us!

Even helpers need help—and for Zulma, community made all the difference.

As a Community Health Mentor with Wider Circle, Zulma is the kind of person who lifts others up. Whether guiding and supporting members in need or just showing up to events with a smile, she’s always been there for her community.

But for the past five years, Zulma had been quietly struggling with her own health issue—serious damage to her teeth following a car accident. Despite her best efforts, she couldn’t find a dentist who would accept her insurance. The cost and lack of access weighed on her, but she kept it to herself and continued to focus on helping others.

That changed one day during a conversation with a Wider Circle team member. Zulma finally opened up “I’ve tried for years,” she said, “but no one takes my insurance.” Hearing the frustration in her voice, a Wider Circle facilitator made a quick call to a local dental office — and within minutes, they had good news.

The dentist accepted Zulma’s insurance. Even better, the office was close to her home.

Zulma was overwhelmed with relief when her appointment was scheduled and told her Wider Circle facilitator “I am so blessed to have met you, to be a part of Wider Circle. Had I not known you, I would still be struggling with my teeth.”

After five years of waiting, Zulma could finally get the dental care she deserved.

Zulma’s story is a powerful reminder that health isn’t just physical—it’s emotional, social, and often deeply personal. And sometimes, the smallest acts of support can open the door to lasting change.
